Painting technique

See how the colour is born

ENGLISH

To decide the right moment to start painting, you have to apply a sheet of paper to the damp wall. When it falls, the intonaco is ready to be traced and painted.

It is necessary to observe the work well and perceive each colour, zones of different intensity: a dark zone, an intermediate zone, a light zone, and possibly white zones which will not be painted: the coating while drying will give a bright white.

The fresco artist paints progressively over the entire surface of the giornata and begins with the dark areas with a thin solution of pigments. Light areas can be painted last unless they are at the top of the giornata. Darkening the painting is easy, but lightening is no longer possible. Therefore it is necessary to use diluted pigments. We do not mix pigments of different colours together, but they are superimposed layer after layer, allowing time for carbonation between 2 individual passages.

For a dark area, there may be up to 15 or 20 passes of the brush throughout the duration of painting. For a light area 1 to 3 passes are enough.

It is necessary to wait until the first layer has dried a little before applying the second layer, otherwise the first will be wiped off, or even the coating might get damaged. We put a layer on a given surface, then we continue at another place before returning to the first one.

The brushstrokes should not go the same direction; they can be crossed, irregular, random strokes, leaving out some unpainted places, which will gradually be filled with successive passages. The brush must not press the surface of the coating since it might leave traces and marks. When making a mistake, try to pass with a clean and wet brush, but be careful not to harm the coating.

While painting, it is important to rinse the brush often in clean water, because it takes on lime and becomes hard and abrasive. The brush strokes must be gentle and light so as not to injure the surface.

Przed nałożeniem kolejnej warstwy należy poczekać, aż pierwsza nieco wyschnie; w przeciwnym razie może ona zostać wymazana, a nawet ulec uszkodzeniu.
